Oshian is a label that is exclusive to black NBLW and WLW individuals.

All black wlw/nblw individuals can use the term, including bisexual/pansexual/lesbian (etc) individuals and women and/or non-binary/trans (etc) individuals. Mixed/biracial individuals may also use the term/flag "if [they] are mixed with black" and "as long as [they] are black passing."^[1]

Oshian was coined by an m-spec lesbian exclusionist, and was coined with the intention of excluding m-spec lesbians from using the term.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]

Its sibling flags are junian, and erosian. Similar terms include sapphic, faunic, daunic, neptunic and lesbian.

History

The term was coined by Twitter user mochamoons on March 27th, 2021.^[8]^[9] It was created because black WLW and NBLW felt excluded from the sapphic label, noticing that it was dominated by white folk and wanted a label that was their own and they felt a connection to.^[10]^[11]^[12]^[13]

Flag

The flag was created by Twitter user dazzleyeri on or before March 27th, 2021. The vivid orange stands for the love for women, the light orange stands for sensuality, the very light orange stands for purity, the very soft yellow/eggshell white stands for gender non-conformity, the light brown stands for diversity, the moderate brown stands for the African diaspora, and the dark brown stands for blackness.^[14]

Etymology

The term was inspired by the name of the African river goddess Oshun. She is an important deity in Yoruba spirituality. She was the only goddess of 17 gods sent to populate the Earth, and the only one to succeed. She is considered one of the most powerful gods and is associated with water, purity, fertility, love, and sensuality.^[15]
