LGBT+ or GLBT+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, with the plus standing for anyone not included under the main four categories. The term has been used since the 1990s, the term is an adaptation of the initialism LGB, marking the inclusion of transgender individuals in the community. It is the most commonly used term to refer to the community and it is intended to emphasize a diversity of sexuality and gender identity-based cultures. The term can be used to refer to anyone who is not heterosexual, heteroromantic, allosexual, alloromantic, nor cisgender, instead of exclusively to individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

==Variation==
Several other variants of the acronym exist, some of the most popular include:

*LGBTA(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender/Abrosexual/Abromantic
: Main article: Lesbian
*LGBTQ(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queeric/Questioning
*LGBTI(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex
*LGBTQIA(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queeric/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender/Abrosexual/Abromantic

Many other acronyms that are combination of these. Other, less commonly seen variants may include letters such as "U" for "unsure", "C" for "curious", additional "T" for "transvestic" or "transsex", "TS", "2S", or "2" for "two-spirit", "P" for "polyamorous", "polysexual", or "pansexual", "SA" for "straight allies", "D" for "demisexual", "demiromantic", or "demigender", "H" for "HIV-affected" or "Hijra", "N" for "non-binary", or an "O" for "other" or "omnisexual".
The L stands for lesbian. Lesbian, a term with multiple definitions, is most often defined as a woman who is attracted to other women romantically, sexually, or both. The term is generally used as a self-identification of sexual or romantic orientation. Although lesbians are frequently defined as women who are exclusively attracted to women, another definition is women primarily attracted to other women. Some prefer to use or additionally use "gay" or "gay woman" as an identifier.

Initialisms such as LGBTTQQIAAP (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, ally, pansexual) have also resulted, although such initialisms are often criticized for being leaving some individuals out, as well as issues of placement of the letters within the new title, and are also criticized for implying that allies are members of the community (most queer individuals agree that allies are not LGBT+). They are simultaneously criticized for being too confusing and too long to be used in normal speech. This has resulted in individuals attempting to create new acronyms, such as MOGAI (Marginalized Orientations, Gender And Intersex), GSRM (Gender, Sexuality, and Romantic orientation Minorities), QUILTBAG (queer, unsure, intersex, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, asexual/aromantic, gay) and similar terms, however LGBT+ continues to be the most widely recognized term.
Definitions vary in whether or not they use expanded language, such as a person who self-describes as a woman, or phrasing that explicitly includes people who do not identify only as women, such as woman-aligned and some genderqueer and/or non-binary people who feel a connection to womanhood.Lesbians may be cisgender or transgender; since gender is a separate concept from sexual orientation, someone may be both trans and lesbian. Based upon assigned gender at birth, and prior to realizing their gender identity and transitioning, some trans women identify as straight and some trans men identify as lesbians based on their attractions to women. Trans women sometimes subsequently understand and identify themselves as lesbian; trans men may or may not remain in or be accepted by lesbian communities after they transition as men. This does not mean that all butch or otherwise masculine<nowiki/>lesbians are transgender.

==Alternatives==
Certain lesbians have used the label to describe their gender in addition to their attractions. In the 2021 Gender Census, an annual online international survey of people who do not strictly identify with the gender binary, participants indicated their personal identifiers; the item "lesbian (partially or completely in relation to gender)" was selected by 12.9% of the participants.

==Flags==
For over a century, lesbians have debated who shares their identity and is part of the lesbian community. They have variously been defined based on sexual behaviors, sexual attractions, or self-identifying with the label. For instance, women who self-identify as both bisexual and lesbian would not be included in a definition that specifies lesbians are only oriented toward women, but would be in a broader definition that encompasses other labels.
Flags have been made over a variation of years, due to updates and changes being made within the community. The original rainbow pride flag dates back to 1978, when it was created by San Francisco-based queer artist Gilbert Baker.

Over the next two years, its design was changed for different reasons. At the time, hot pink was a non-standard color in flag fabric production, and deemed too costly to reproduce. The turquoise and indigo stripes were also dropped in favor of royal blue when organizers of San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day Parade wanted to split the flag in half to fly across the street and wanted equal stripes on both sides.

The progress pride flag was created in 2018 by Graphic designer Daniel Quasar in order to show progress and inclusion of queer POC and trans POC. Since then more variants of the progress flag have arisen.

The older "ultimate queer flag", or "mega LGBT+ flag" was created by a user going by Adora on January 26th of 2021. On the top, the blue is for transmasculine, the pink is for transfeminine, the white is for any outherine/xenic genders, the intersex flag is for all variants of intersex individuals, while the purple is for transneutral and transandrogynous individuals. On the bottom, it has the multisexual flag for all multisexual identities, the rainbow for any same-gender loving identities, and the last flag is supposed to resemble the a-spec flag for any a-spec identities. The black stripe is for gender non-conformity and pronoun-non conformity, while the design in the middle is supposed to represent POC and sex workers, as red umbrellas are often associated with sex work.
The G stands for gay. Gay is an adjective referring to those with an enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction to people of the same gender.This is most commonly associated with men, as a gay woman may prefer to use the term "lesbian" instead. Queer and bisexual are also among the terms used for those who are attracted to members of the same gender. In a broader sense of the word, gay can also be used as an umbrella term to identify any LGBTQIA+ individual, though some note that doing so excludes other sexual orientations and gender identities and should thus be avoided.

The new "ultimate queer flag" or "mega LGBT+ flag" was created by Anderson (with Adora's approval, as they are from the same system), on June 27th of 2021. The rainbow is for gay, lesbian, vincian, gai, unlabeled, and other queer individuals. The purples and pink at the top of the flag are taken from the varsex pride flag (to be inclusive of both altersex and intersex individuals.) At the bottom of the flag, dark brown represents black individuals, tan represents Asian, indigenous, mixed race, and other POC individuals, and white represents albino individuals, as they face discrimination as well. In the design on the middle of the flag, there are four petals; blue represents transmasculine individuals, pink represents transfeminine individuals, purple represents transneutal and transandrogynous individuals, and yellow represents outherine genders, xenic genders, and cultural genders. On the petals, there are four Ms, each representing something; multisexual identities, multiromantic identities, multigender identities, and movement towards equality. In the middle of the design, green represents aromanticism and aro-spec identities, white represents tertiary attraction, purple represents asexuality and ace-spec identities, and dark grey represents agender/genderless identities, demigender identities, and the act of rejecting conformity (in pronouns, gender expression, societal roles, etc.) The red octagon represents sex workers, as their common symbol is a red umbrella, and the infinity symbol represents polyamory, polygamy, ambiamory, and other forms of ethical non-monogamy.
"Gay" as an identity is defined by the attraction and self-identification as such rather than having had any sexual experience with people of the same gender.Thus, having had sexual intercourse with someone of the same gender does not make anyone gay by definition. There is not just one way to experience same-sex attraction, nor is there a set period in life to discover that you experience it. While some may know that they experience same-sex attraction from a young age, it can take others decades to figure it out or be comfortable enough with their identity to acknowledge it to themselves and others.

The "Mixed Inclusion" pride flag by FANDOM user Zer0Rebel4 is comprised of multiple LGBT+ pride flag variations. The colour meanings are, Lavender for intersex variations, rose for ace and aro-spec individuals, magenta for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, aqua for magic, blue for serenity, violet for spirit, dark brown for black queer folks and those who passed in the Stonewall and other riots, brown for other Queer POC and sufferers of HIV/AIDS, sky for trans men and masc/male aligned individuals, pink for trans women and fem/female aligned individuals, and white for non-binary and other queer identities.
Being gay is also referred to as "homosexuality" and thus forms the counterpart of "heterosexuality", the sexual attraction to individuals of the opposite gender.However, controversy has arisen surrounding the use of the word "homosexuals" to refer to gay people, as it has been considered an outdated term that is derogatory and offensive to many lesbian and gay people due to its usage by anti-LGBTQIA+ individuals to imply that gay people are somehow diseased or psychologically/emotionally disordered.

The "Harmony" pride flag, (also sometimes known as the "Community" pride flag,) created by Tumblr user PoisonousPastels on February 14th, 2021, aims to achieve representation of all within the LGBT+ community. Unlike most pride flags, this flag is not rectangular. Instead, it opts to have a swallowtail shape. The heart within the center is representative of love, both platonic and romantic. The ring/circle around it represents a unified space where everyone can feel welcome. The empty space of the swallowtail formation represents space for those who are still questioning/figuring out their identity. Individual colors also have their own meanings: Black is for individual experiences, brown is for individuals of color, pink is for community and acceptance. red is for gender non-conformity, orange is for love of the same gender, yellow is for non-binary, intersex, and genderqueer identities, green is for a-spec identities, light blue is for freedom, darker blue is for love of multiple genders, and purple is for spirit.

The T stands for transgender. Transgender, often shortened to trans, is an umbrella term that describes an individual whose gender identity differs from their assigned gender at birth (AGAB). Infants are assigned a sex that is recorded on their birth certificate, which is usually based only on the appearance of external genitalia. The birth assignment—generally defaulting to assigned male at birth (AMAB) or assigned female at birth (AFAB)—assumes that the individual's gender identity will correspond to their assigned sex. A person's gender identity—their sense of gender—usually develops when they are very young. The realization that their gender is different from what they were assigned can occur as early as three years old or in childhood prior to the onset of puberty. It may also happen later in life.

The Q stands for queer. Queer is an identifier for individuals and/or the community of people who are not cisgender heterosexual. It can be used instead of, or in addition to, other identifiers of sexual orientation, such as lesbian, bisexual, or gay. Queer can also refer to gender identity or gender expression,whether as a standalone term or part of another like genderqueer. The "Q" in LGBTQIA+ and similar acronyms commonly means Queer. As a reclaimed word, it has been used in fights for LGBTQIA+ rights and liberation as an inclusive and sometimes defiant term. PFLAG and GLAAD are two of the organizations that recommend only using it for people who self-identify as queer because it has varying meanings and is not universally accepted. In addition, the term may be used in preference to other identifiers by members, for a variety of reasons.The "Q" may also stand for questioning.

Flag

The original pride flag was designed by Gilbert Baker for the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day celebration. It had eight colors: pink stood for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.

Due to a lack of fabric when the demand for pride flags soared after the assassination of gay San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk on November 27, 1978, the pink color was removed and in years 1978 and 1979 a seven-stripe version of Baker's flag was used. This started with the Paramount Flag Company using fabric with seven stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet; soon afterwards Gilbert Baker himself removed the pink color as well from his flag.

In 1979, Baker intended to decorate streetlamps with rainbow banners. To make the process easier, he decided to remove the turquoise color from the flag, so he could have a design with an even number of stripes flanking each lamp pole along the streets. His third and most famous version of the pride flag has six colors and is a widely used pride flag to this day. It has six stripes: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

In 2017, the Philadelphia's Office of LGBT Affairs led by civil rights activist Amber Hikes redesigned the flag to include two new stripes: black and brown. Those stripes were added to include and honor queer people of color. This flag is known as the Philadelphia Pride Flag or Philly Pride Flag.

In 2018, Daniel Quasar modified the Philadelphia Pride Flag and included the colors of the transgender pride flag, as well as expanded the meaning of the black stripe to represent those who are living with HIV and AIDS. The arrow-shaped hoist is meant to symbolize a progressive community that continues to evolve and move forward, and those colors are separated from the rest to emphasize what is currently important in the LGBTQIA+ climate and to recognize that those experiences must be put to the forefront by the wider community as we work toward progress. This flag is known as the Progress Pride Flag.

In 2020, Jason Domino, a sex-worker rights advocate, modified the Progress Pride Flag by adding the red umbrella symbol which is used by sex-workers to include them and honor those LGBTQIA+ rights activists who were also sex workers.

In 2021, Valentino Vecchietti of Intersex Equality Rights UK adapted the Pride Progress flag design to incorporate the intersex flag, creating this Intersex-Inclusive Pride flag 2021.

Variation

Several other variants of the acronym exist, some of the most popular include:

• LGBTA(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender/Abrosexual/Abromantic
• LGBTQ(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queeric/Questioning
• LGBTI(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex
• LGBTQIA(+): Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queeric/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender/Abrosexual/Abromantic

Flags
