Alterian is a gender element from the element system. It is associated with the element of spirit and a xenine gender element. The xenine element refers to identities that don’t conform or relate to concepts like feminine, masculine, or neutral, but is instead something some else, often concepts, symbols, nature, shapes, feelings. Xenogenders would fall under this catagory. Spirit is used to represent it because it reflects the nature of the gender element- they are both on a different plane than the other elements and operate on different levels. One whose gender element is purely neutral would be called alterian. The noun form of the word is alteri (ex: I am alteri). The term can be combined with other gender terms, such as demialterian, or alteriboy.

The term alterian and the flag were made on the Tumblr blog Genderelementarchive on December 23, 2017[1].
