Liminalgender is a xenogender that comes from a strong connection to liminal spaces or liminality where your gender feels feels disoriented or ambiguous. It was designed originally to be an open gender.

A second definition of liminalgender is an identity related to of liminal spaces, notably but not exclusively the backrooms. It is often, but not always, said to be a "warm" gender. It is a neurogender that applies exclusively to those with trauma and/or neurodivergence. Because of this, it can seem detached and void-like, and at times may feel like it doesn’t exist or only partially exists.

Liminalgender can have modifiers related to one's alignment or presentation, such as liminalboy, liminalgirl, liminalnonbinary, etc.

    Flags

The liminalgender flag was made by Twitter user @ARCADEFL00R on July 13th, 2020, the same date it was coined.[1] The stripes represent ambiguity, disorientation, connection to liminal spaces, liminality, and "what the f*ck is gender".

An alternative flag for liminalgender was created by Tumblr user @kenochoric on November 10th, 2020[2]. The stripes do not have individual meanings, but the overall color choice and design was based off of levels 0 through 4 of the backrooms, starting with the yellow hues of level 0 and 1 down to the darker levels where lights are often completely shut off. This flag was made with an intent to be for neurodivergent and/or traumatized people only and being for the second definition of the term.
