Label Non-Conforming, or LNC, is an umbrella term for individuals who do not conform to typical label standards. Examples of label non-conformity include, but are not limited to:
- People who use microlabels, pocket genders, or pocket orientations.
- People who use xenic labels.
- Non-binary people who use orientation labels that are often perceived as binary in nature, such as straight, gay, lesbian, vincian, or similar terms, regardless of one's gender alignment.
- Non-binary people who use gender labels that are often perceived as binary in nature, such as man, woman, or similar terms, regardless of one's gender alignment.
- Transgender men who use typically woman-aligned orientation labels, such as lesbian, sapphic, or similar terms. One may also identify as a lesboy, saphboy, shadowlesbian, or shadowsapphic.
- Transgender women who use typically man-aligned orientation labels, such as vincian, achillean, or similar terms. One may also identify as a shadowvincian or shadowachillean.
- People who are unlabeled.
- People who hoard or collect labels.
- People who are labelflux.
- People who identify as both m-spec and lesbian, vincian, gay, or straight.
- People who are varioriented.
- People who label their tertiary attraction.
- Anyone who doesn't precisely fit a definition of a certain label, but identifies with it regardless.
Label non-conformists often believe that the people define their labels, rather than their labels defining them. They often take a casual approach to labels, rather than treating them as strict, unchangeable, or mandatory. Label non-conformity can sometimes center around one's own comfort with a label, rather than centering around the definition or precise accuracy of the label.
