Hypoestrogenism or Estrogen Deficiency is an intersex variation in which one has low estrogenic activity within their body. It can affect both CTF and CTM individuals alike.[1]
In CTF individuals, symptoms may include physical and chemical changes of the vulva/vagina, hot flashes, and amenorrhea.
For both CTF and CTM individuals, symptoms may include hot flashes, sleeping disturbances, decreased bone health, changes in the genitourinary system, pain during sexual intercourse, a lower urinary tract, and defects in bone health (which may result in scoliosis, bone resorption, type I osteoporosis, fractures, and low bone density). Infertility may occur.[2]
CTM individuals with this variation also have aromatase deficiency and/or estrogen insensitivity syndrome in many cases.[3]
Causes
Hypoestrogenism can be caused by hypogonadism (both müllerian hypogonadism and wolffian hypogonadism) and/or certain medications. For CTF individuals, menopause, functional amenorrhea, and/or primary ovarian insufficiency may be the cause of this variation.[4]
