Abinary (abbreviated AB), aphorian or apisgender refers to any gender that is completely unrelated to maleness, masculinity, femaleness, or femininity, and is nowhere in between those things, while not necessarily being genderless (although agender individuals may also identify as abinary). An abinary individual may feel a strong sense of gender, however that gender is completely unrelated from the binary genders. Abinary is sometimes used as interchangeably with "unaligned non-binary" or "neutral aligned non-binary". It refers to the fact that some non-binary individuals are "man-aligned" or "woman-aligned" while not being men or women. Abinary/unaligned non-binary individuals are completely separate from these categories.

Some examples of abinary genders include neutrois, stellarian, maverique, and aporagender. Many xenogenders are abinary.

    History

The term abinary is combination of the prefix "a" and "binary", to mean "lacking binary". Its first mention was in the midbinary coining post by nothorses (previously starmashine) on or before October 25, 2016. Other similar words popped up such as exterbinary and off-binary.[1]

Apisgender was coined as an alternative suffixed with gender by Tumblr user arco-pluris on August 21, 2018.[2]

Aphorian was coined by Tumblr user restings4dface (now soong-type-delta) on or before December, 2021, as an alternative without binary suffix.[3]

    Flags

The abinary flag was created by arco-pluris through the Tumblr blog beyond-mogai-pride-flags on May 18, 2018[4]. There is no known meaning, however yellow is commonly used as an abinary color due to being unrelated to the colors of the binary genders (blue and pink).

Two alternate flags were created by Clear.Skyes on or before December 15, 2020. They have no confirmed meaning.

Another alternate flag was designed by Tumblr user dollomine on March 5, 2022.[5] Vermillion means strength, autonamy, tangerine means joy, pride, gender creativity, cream means solidarity between genderlessness & neutrality, grey means ambiguity, rejection of the binary, and midnight means reinvention and use of midbinaryness in an abinary way.

    Etymology

Abinary uses the latin prefix "a-" meaning "without" or "not", making the whole word translate to "not binary".
