    History

The term was coined by g0refaery on Tumblr. It was then posted on May 10th, 2021.[1]

    Flags

The original flag that has been found was shown on a "gender hoard" post by g0refaery on Tumblr, featuring a plethora of identities and their respective flags, and grim's claim to being a coiner of the gender. It's unknown who created the flag and it has no confirmed meaning. A HD version of the flag was then posted by Tumblr user purelycryptic on January 12th, 2022.[2]

The alternate flag was created by now deactivated Tumblr user 4ranken4reekie with the help of Twitter user GojiDoesIt, on or before November 13th, 2020.[3] Purple symbolizes the horror genre as a whole, everything scary and spooky and creepy and haunting and fun. Teal symbolizes masks that many slashers wear (including Leslie Vernon, a slasher inspired by other slashers) and the concept of masking for autistic individuals, and being in the closet for LGBTQ+ individuals. Light grey or white symbolizes neurodivergency, and trans and non-binary individuals. Green symbolizes The Final Gender Circuit, a reference to the Final Girl Circuit trope in slasher films. Black symbolizes feeling a connection with horror characters. This can be with either villains or heroes within the horror genre. The smaller stripes in-between the larger ones are made to look similar to slashes running through the flag. Red symbolizes blood and guts or gore. Neon blue symbolizes supernatural horror, like "The Ring", "Poltergeist", ghosts, magic lightening, and more. Neon green symbolizes sci-fi horror, like "Alien", "Predator", "The Thing", "Re-Animator", and more. Orange or golden yellow symbolizes manic glee, Halloween (the holiday and the movies), Jack-O-Lanterns, and fire.
