Preterbinary describes a person with a gender beyond the spectrum of male and female. Preterbinary is not non-binary but instead parallels the traditional gender binary. Preterbinary people include pretergirls and preterboys. However, one preterbinary person may have a different conception of the gender binary they are part of than another.
History and Flag
The term was coined on or before October 3, 2015, which is when DeviantArt user Pride-Flags created the pretergirl and preterboy flags.[1][2]
The first standalone preterbinary flag was created by Tumblr user neopronouns on January 28, 2021.[3]
