The term Pokésexual (also Pokesexual) describes someone who is attracted to Pokémon species. Pokésexual falls under the fictiosexuality umbrella, due to Pokémon species being fictional. The attraction to Pokémon can range to animalistic, humanoid, inanimate, and spiritual, in which attributes paraphilias—excluding humanoids—like zoophilia, objectophilia, and spectrophilia.
Controversy
This term is controversial in whether it is harmful or not, due to the fact that many Pokémon can communicate through non-verbal (and even sometimes verbal) ways. However, the sexualization of Pokémon is often shown through illustrated images of sexual slavery, as Pokémon are, in many cases, unable to deny their master’s commands.
Acceptable attraction
There are some Pokémon that are acceptable to hold attraction to, specifically if they fit the following criteria:
- They are consenting in the imagery/writing.
- They are not doing it just to abide to the trainer’s wishes.
- They are sapient and able to understand the implications.
- They can consent.
In these cases, this attraction is acceptable, however it would be better for one to identify as a term such as fictosexual, anuafsexual, objectum or similar, as Pokesexual has negative connotations. However, one may still identify as Pokesexual, so long as they clarify that their attraction is healthy.
History
This term appears to have been coined by Elkirbydiablo, on May 18th of 2009, through Urban Dictionary.
