The term and flag were created by Tumblr user mogai-flag-central on December 25, 2018.<ref>[https://mogai-flag-central.tumblr.com/post/181402117431/pastelgender-i-believe-i-coined-this-term-but Tumblr post coining pastelgender.]</ref> The original definition included mentions of pastelyellowgender and pastelbluegender but did not define them.

The term was expanded to an umbrella term by FANDOM users [[User:Cosmic_Lemon151|Cosmic Lemon151]] and [[User:Manzenk0|Manzenk0]] on May 7, 2021. The flag was created by FANDOM user Manzenk0 at the same time. The colors of the flag flow together fluidly to represent the pastel color spectrum.
