Numbergender was coined by Tumblr user numberkincutie and posted by Tumblr user mogai-archive on or before July 25, 2014.<ref>[https://unlivedsummers.tumblr.com/post/92808842587/numbergender Tumblr post originally coining numbergender.]</ref><ref>[https://archive.is/8wGh4 Archived Tumblr post edited and posted later than original citing numberkincutie as the coiner of numbergender.]</ref>
The first proposed numbergender flag was created by FANDOM user [[User:Zer0Rebel14|Zer0Rebel4]] on January 25, 2021. The use of lavender in the flag represents algebra, the grey trigonometry, the white geometry, the black mathematics and numbers as a whole, the green statistics and probability, and the pink calculus. The symbol in the middle is the ∀ symbol, which represents "for all" or "for any."
An alternate numbergender flag was created by FANDOM user [[User:Bluesprucedude|Bluesprucedude]] on May 16, 2021. The hexcodes of the two stripes of the alternate flag are inspired by two of the simplest equations in mathematics:
*The quantity 0.999 followed by an infinite string of nines is equivalent to one, or 1=0.99999999999999999, resulting in the hexcode #099999 or turquoise.
*The Pythagorean theorem, or a2+b2=c2, where the value of "a" is one (a=1), as the first letter in the alphabet, and so on, resulting in the hexcode #122232 or dark turquoise.
The use of the equals or = sign represents both equations and inclusivity.
