    The neogender flag.
    An alternate neogender flag.

Neogender is an umbrella term for any gender terms that were coined recently. Under the most strict definition of the term it describes any gender created or given a definitions in or after the year 2000, though the exact limit of when something stops being a neogender may be subjective.

The term is sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably with xenogenders. Although the majority of xenogenders would qualify as neogenders, due to the concept being relatively new, not all neogenders are inherently xenogenders. The term is also sometimes misapply to genders that are not well known (regardless of how old the gender is) (eg: epicene). Additionally not all neogender are uncommon. For example, under the most strict definition, even commonly known terms such demiboy would qualify as neogenders.

The opposite of neogenders are classified as archaeogenders.

    History

Neogender appears to have been originally coined by Tumblr user lgbtqiarchive on or before May 25, 2019.[1]

The term was later elaborated on by MM at Mogai-Wiki on October 20, 2020.[2] They were the one who give the specific date of 2000 or later. They also used interchangeable with "MOGAI genders", and the term was clarified specifically to classify what is and isn’t "MOGAI", though this is based on a misunderstanding of what MOGAI means. Mogai-Wiki is sometimes incorrectly credited as the one to create the term, though they never claimed to do so.

    Flag

The neogender flags were created by rando-pride-flags on Tumblr on October 20, 2020.[3] The flags used typically "non-gendered" colors.
