Name alignments, also known as nominal alignments or nomi alignments, are terms to describe the gender qualities associated with one's name(s). These terms are primarily used by those who have and/or collect multiple names, to describe the types of names one uses/collects, however they can be used by anyone. One's nominal alignment may be related to/affected by one's gender identity, but it does not have to be; these terms may be used by anyone regardless of gender identity or presentation.

How one defines one's nominal alignment may be affected by how one perceives one's name(s) and/or societal perceptions of one's name(s). Examples of this may be:

• A Nomifem person may only use names they perceive as feminine/feminine-leaning, regardless of how the names are typically used/perceived.
• A Nomimasc person may experience detachment from/discomfort with the idea of using a name and decide not to use it if they find that it is often perceived as gender-neutral, given to AFAB babies at a higher rate than AMAB babies, and/or listed on name-related websites as feminine/gender neutral.
• One may feel the need to check statistics relating to a name, usage of the name in media and/or read articles that discuss a given name to "verify" how a name will be perceived by others (particularly in relation to its gender alignment) before feeling comfortable using it.

Terminology

Nomifem: One's names are primarily feminine-aligned and/or feminine-leaning. This may be due to a name being more commonly given to AFAB babies, or generally being perceived as feminine by one's society and/or oneself.

Nomimasc: One's names are primarily masculine-aligned and/or masculine-leaning. This may be due to a name being more commonly given to AMAB babies, or generally being perceived as masculine by one's society and/or oneself.

Nomiae/nomineutral: One's names are primarily neutral-aligned. This may be due to a name being given to AMAB and AFAB babies with similar frequency or a name being generally perceived as gender neutral by one's society and/or one'self.

Nomix/Nomi-x: One's names/the names that one collects are primarily unaligned or do not have any particular gender qualities associated with them. This may be due to a name being widely unknown/obscure, not usually used as a name, created by oneself, and/or a name that is otherwise not associated with any given gender quality. Such names may feel detached from the concept of gender alignment as they are not usually used in relation to people or used in association with femininity/masculinity/neutrality.

Combination Terms

These terms describe one who experiences multiple nominal alignments in some form. This may or may not be related to/affected by one's gender identity.

Nomifae: One's names are primarily feminine-aligned, feminine-leaning and/or neutral-aligned.

Nomifaun: One's names are primarily masculine-aligned, masculine-leaning and/or neutral-aligned.

Nomifloren: One's names are primarily masculine-leaning, neutral-aligned and/or feminine-leaning.

Nomistell: One's names are primarily masculine, masculine-leaning, neutral-aligned, feminine-leaning and/or feminine.

Nomix-: Any nominal alignment term may be combined with nomix- to denote that one's names are primarily unaligned and/or aligned with another identity, either in addition to or in combination with other alignments, e.g., Nomixae (neutral-aligned and/or unaligned), Nomixfae (feminine-aligned, feminine-leaning, neutral-aligned and/or unaligned), Nomixstell (masculine, masculine-leaning, neutral-aligned, feminine-leaning, feminine and/or unaligned).

For example, a Nomifae person could:

• Have multiple names, some of which are feminine and some of which are neutral.
• Only use names that are feminine-leaning but could also be considered neutral.
• Sometimes prefer to use/collect feminine names and other times prefer neutral names.

Origin

The nominal alignment terms were coined by Violet and Seren from the FANDOM account Contie, on the Pronoun Wiki FANDOM site, 25th July 2021. Some of the terms were inspired by pre-existing terms, such as Genderfae and Genderfaun. The term Nomistell was named by FANDOM user Ddgi.

Flags

The Nomifem, Nomimasc and Nomiae flags were created by Seren from the FANDOM account Contie, 26th July 2021. The Nomix, Nomifae, alternate Nomifae, Nomifaun, alternate Nomifaun, Nomifloren, Nomistell, Nomixfem, Nomixmasc, Nomixae, Nomixfae, Nomixfaun, Nomifloren, Nomixfloren and Nomixstell flags were created by Nebula from the FANDOM account Contie, 27th July 2021.

• For all of the flags: black represents strength and the freedom to define oneself, and white represents the use of multiple names and fluctuating/fluctuating use of names. The black heart emblem, used in other nomi- related terms, is symbolic of an individual's connection one's name(s)/absence of names.
• For the Nomifem flag: pink represents feminine-aligned names, the two shades of purple represent varying degrees of feminine-leaning names.
• For the Nomimasc flag: blue represents masculine-aligned names, the two shades of purple represent varying degrees of masculine-leaning names.
• For the Nomimasc flag: green represents neutral-aligned names, the two shades of purple represent varying degrees of neutral-leaning names.
• For the Nomix flag: grey represents uncommon, unknown and otherwise unaligned names, the two shades of purple represent primarily unaligned names with varying degrees of obscurity and/or connection to given gender qualities.
