Mosaic is a non-binary gender identity and an identity that is a mixture of masculine, feminine, and xenine. One with this gender identity is salmacian (meaning they desire or have two sets of genitals, or a set of mixed genitals) and their altersex identity - or intersex body - effects how they perceive their gender, or vice versa.

In the case of mosaic individuals, their xeninity is usually related directly to their altersex identity, though this does not exclusively need to be the case. The most common ways for mosaics to feel xenine in relation to their bodies are:

• Relating to the myth of Hermaphroditus, who literally embodied androgyny and being altersex/intersex/salmacian, and feeling such a strong connection to it that it effects their gender experience.
• Their altersex identity featuring diffxeno aspects.
• Relating to their altersex identity, with or without diffxeno elements, where they no longer feel like their gender experience is something organically explained within the usually binary/trinary understanding of gender due to their differentiated body.

When describing oneself, mosaic individuals may fall into the following categories:

• One who wishes to transition to represent the combination of both male and female aspects. They may describe themselves as trans-mosaic or salmosaic (a combination of salmacian and mosaic).
• One has a feeling that their genetic makeup itself should be mosaic in nature without the desire to transition, they could call themselves genomosaic (meaning they likely have ambiguous genitals or other intersex traits that they already resonate with.)
• One who wishes to transition to represent the genitalia they are most comfortable with, but are unable to due to physical limitations in human medical practices. With these limitations in place, one may use other methods of expressing their true self where medicine fails them, like adopting different pronouns, gender presentations or, atypically, speech patterns that they wouldn't have altered otherwise. They may describe themselves as cognimosaic (a mosaic individual who is made to use their cognitive skills to show their true nature, instead of physical alterations).

History

The term and usage of this gender was coined by the user ThrownawayCoffeeMug in 2021.

Flag and Symbols

The flag was created in 2021 by user ThrownawayCoffeeMug. The symbol is a combination of both the male and female symbols, indicating the combination of both binary sexes or genders. The symbol is also mixed with the symbol for Mercury, which was the old symbol for the mixture of feminine and masculine features. It also represents the god Hermaphriditus. The four dots represent the phases of life; the top indicates who you are, and the side three indicate past, present, and future. In the center is the symbol for xenogenders.

The colors and their meanings are as follows:

• Purple: the varying shades/tints represent the various feelings of in-between one can have, from shallow to deep. It can be a simple physical feeling one has of their body, to a more complex spiritual feeling, and anything in between.

• Grey: the unknown form of gender, an ever encompassing sea that changes from person to person, making it a unique, individual experience for everyone.

• Black: the portion of gender that is neutral, a color that goes with every other color with ease and compliment. It's the lack of feeling overly masculine or feminine, rather it's the mix of both, the lack of feeling either, or even a fluctuation between the two.

Etymology

The word 'Mosaic' is based off of the term 'Mosaicism', a genetic phenomena where the chromosomes of an animal/plant/human/etc is different throughout its body. Mosaic indicates its relation to genetic combinations that can happen and the feeling of wanting a combination different from their own.
