Filogender is a gender identity that only exists when one think actively thinks about it. When one does not think about or explore their gender identity they do not have one, or it feels quiet or forgotten until called to attention. One feels genderless until they think about their gender, at which point they experience a gender identity(s). One may or may not be able to "choose" which gender to experience.
Filogender can be considered an agender spectrum identity. The term is also related to genderflux, with filogender individuals fluctuating between genderless and gendered when they think about their gender.
Alternative labels include existigender, pensgender, cognogender/cogitogender, opinogender, and oblivigender.
Subsets
Filogender can be combined with any other gender to specify the nature of one's filogender.
Filoboy
An existiboy is someone who is only a boy when thinking about or exploring their gender or gender identity. Otherwise they are genderless.
Filogirl
An existigirl is someone who is only a girl when thinking about or exploring their gender or gender identity. Otherwise they are genderless.
Filononbinary
An existinonbinary person is someone who is only non-binary when thinking about or exploring their gender or gender identity. Otherwise they are genderless.
History and Flag
Filogender was originally coined by an anonymous creator on or before January 25, 2015.[1] The original definition referred to a gender that was thread-like, described as not particularly strong or visible.
The first filogender flag was created by DeviantArt user Pride-Flags on August 17, 2015.[2] This flag also doubles as the filononbinary flag. A filogirl flag and a filoboy flag were created later that day.[3][4]
An alternate filogender flag was created by DeviantArt user Helkie-three on September 3, 2015.[5]
Etymology
Filogender comes from the Latin filum, meaning "thread," in reference to the idea that the gender is only noticeable when focused on, like a thread.
Existigender comes from the Latin existere, meaning "to come into being."
Pensgender comes from the Latin penser, meaning "to think," "to reflect," or "to concentrate."
Cognogender/cognitogender comes from the Latin cogitare, meaning "to think," or "to ponder."
Oblivigender comes from the Latin oblivio, meaning "forgotten," in reference to the idea that the gender identity disappears when 'forgotten' or not thought about.
