    The original egogender flag
    An alternate egogender flag

Egogender, also known as charagender, is a xenogender where the only way to describe one’s gender is simply as oneself. One's gender can only be described as themselves and is therefore unique to them. It can be combined with other genders, such as egogirl, egoboy, or egononbinary.

    History

Egogender was coined by Tumblr user queerspike on July 10, 2014 when they were inspired by a list of prefixes.[1]

    Flags

The primary egogender flag was designed by DeviantArt user pastelmemer on or before August 23, 2015.[2] The flag's color meanings are currently unknown.

The original egogender flag was designed by DeviantArt user Helkie-three on November 4, 2014.[3][4] The flag's color meanings are currently unknown.

The alternate flag was designed by an unknown user on or before May 8, 2021.[3] The flag's color meanings are currently unknown, but it can be assumed that this flag is based on the egogender flag by Helkie-three.

    Etymology

The prefix ego- translates to "self" in multiple languages.[1][5] The prefix chara- may have been taken from the word "character."
