Demiqueer, sometimes demigenderqueer, is a label within the demigender umbrella that describes people who do not feel like a gendered term like -boy or -girl can be added to demi- to describe themselves. Demiqueer people are both demigender and genderqueer.

    History

The first known use of the term is by Tumblr user feylavie-blog on November 19, 2014.[1] The modern definition of demiqueer comes from a Tumblr anon whose message was posted on September 30, 2018. [2]

In 2015, a transphobic meme emerged stringing together multiple non-binary genders, xenogenders, and kingenders, often including demiqueer, to mock the MOGAI community on Tumblr.[3][4] Exclusionists on Tumblr have used the term in a derogatory and transphobic way.[5]

    Flag

The first demiqueer flag was created by Tumblr user pride-color-schemes on July 28, 2016.[6] The color scheme is a reference to the demigender pride flag.

The second demiqueer flag was created by Pride-Flags on DeviantArt on January 9, 2017.[7]

On January 30, 2019, Tumblr user imoga-pride designed a simplified alternative to previous demiqueer flags.[8]

On March 5, 2020, another simplified version of the demiqueer pride flag was created by Tumblr user the-gender-collector-emself.[9]
