Crossigen was coined on October 5, 2020, by a Wikia user going by Alexander, to express his aesthetic of gender expression through themes related and based around Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The crossigen flag was also created by user Alex; blue represents peaceful waters and bright skies, green represents the land you walk on, yellow represents the golden feeling of validation, dark brown represents woodland that may grow there, light brown represents the dirt and ground, tan represents the sandy beaches, and the symbol represents the time you spend there.
The alternative crossigen flag was created by an anonymous wiki user on November 10, 2020. The tan stripe represents sandy beaches, the brown stripe represents dirt and trees, cream represents softness, happiness, friendship, and validation, green represents the grass and plants, and the leaf represents Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Each color was picked directly from the game.
