The term was coined by tumblr user hawaiiaine, also known as pancherryblossom, on January 5th 2019. The flag was made on January 21 2019.[2]

An alternate flag design was created by tumblr user Xenoleaf on or before December 13st 2019.[3] The four horizontal lines at the top represent foliage, the two vertical brown lines represent tree trunks and the two dark green stripes represent the ground.
