The term was coined by Tumblr user sweet-gendies (specifically Aiden) on May 26, 2021. A post was created on September 6, 2021.
According to the coiner, cute genders are defined as follows:
"Cuteness is subjective, but these genders were created with pastels, bright colors, Sanrio, My Little Pony, and kidcore related aesthetigenders in mind. As I've said though, cuteness is subjective, and if you find a gender unrelated to these to be a cute gender in your eyes, then adorafaun/adorafae may still be for you!"
