The absgender flag

Absgender is a gender modality that refers to when one is not cisgender, but also does not identify as transgender since one does not feel like transgender describes them due to the fact that their gender does not exist.

Examples of individuals who may identify as absgender include:

• Someone who is an agender or otherwise genderless individual.
• Someone who sometimes just stops feeling gender, switching to an agender or otherwise genderless individual.
• Someone whose gender fluctuates in intensity, as the gender loses intensity, the individual is agender or otherwise genderless.

If one sometimes experiences another gender(s), they could identify as absgender and transgender, or cisgender and absgender, or other combinations of gender modalities (as long as they fit the other term too), if they prefer it.

“Abs-” can be used as a prefix in the same way that “cis-” or “trans-” can be used as prefixes to describe one's gender in relation to their assignment.

One may also relate to cisn't and/or transn't.

Absgender vs Isogender

Absgender and isogender are similar terms in that they both describe not being cisgender or transgender, but they are not exactly the same. Absgender means not being cis or trans because one is agender or otherwise genderless individual. Isogender means being neither cis nor trans, for whatever reason.

Although these terms are not the same, some absgender individuals may also identify as isogender, and some isogender individuals may also identify as absgender.

Absgender vs Centrgender

Absgender and centrgender are similar terms in that they both describe not being cisgender or transgender, but they are not exactly the same. Absgender means not being cis or trans because one is agender or otherwise a genderless individual. Centrgender is for anyone who doesn't fit into the categories of trans or cis. Centrgender can be used as its own term or an umbrella term. As un umbrella term, centrgender would include isogender and absgender.

Although these terms are not the same, some absgender individuals may also identify as centrgender, and some centrgender individuals may also identify as absgender.

History

This term was coined by Gent (Tumblr user Gender-Resource) in 2020 after Arco-Pluris requested an alternative term for isogender and metagender.

Etymology

The name comes from the Latin word “abs-”, a prefix meaning “away (from)”, in this case referring to being conceptually ‘away’ from both explicit cisgenderness and transgenderness.
