Hi, I know the idea of romantic orientions can be confusing, but hopefully I can explain it. Firstly, aromanticism isn't an preferance, it's an orientation just like, gay, bi, or straight. Secondly, society is full of amatonormativity, which basically means that people assume that one of the goals in everyone's life is to have a romantic, monogomous relationship. Most alloromantic people consider aro-spec people weird or even inhuman for not feeling romantic attraction is the "normal" way. In some cases this can cause aro-spec people to force themselves into unhappy relationships because they feel like that's what they should want. By having a name and community for this it can help people who would otherwise feel broken and confused to know that their are other people like them and it's perfectly valid to go your whole life without feeling romantic attraction.

With all that said you don't necessarily have to under an orientation to respect it. You seem like a nice person who's just cursious so just know that other people find comfort in identifying as aro-spec.
