So, this concept confuses me, but I will try: the animal isn't the gender. They aren't saying "I am a cat." They are saying it is catlike. Xenogenders not explainable in the English language, and they use bases to describe them. For example, this gender is explained by saying it is catlike, because humans can understand what that means... well, at least, sorta.
