Plantgender is a xenogender in which someone feels a connection with plants or soil. While some plantgender individuals identify with certain plants, others may feel a stronger connection to gardening, plant care, or the aesthetics of plants.[1]
Examples of specific plantgenders include:
- Monsteradelic, a connection with the plant Monstera deliciosa
- Carnivorplantean, a connection with carnivorous plants
- Venus-flytrapean, a connection with Venus Flytraps
- Fernean, a connection with ferns
- House-plantean, a connection with house plants
- Chlorophyllic, a connection with chlorophyll, the color green, light, the sun, energy, and life
- Petrichoric, a connection with petrichor, the smell of humid earth, rain, soil, plants, grass, spring, and summer
- Cactusgender, a connection with cacti, in which one's gender feels like it hurts or it stings
History
The first individual to define plantgender as it is used now was Urban Dictionary user That.weirdass.kid on March 18, 2019.[2]
Before it was a recognized xenogender, in 2016, plantgender was shorthand for a transphobic meme demeaning the MOGAI community on Tumblr.[3]

The first plantgender flag was created by Tumblr user plant-gender on March 28, 2020.[4]
The second plantgender flag was created by DeviantArt user Pride-Flags on February 14, 2021.[5]
The third plantgender flag was created by a user going by HotdogVoid on or before September 14, 2021.
