Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) is an intersex variation in which one who is AMAB/CTM and has a typically wolffian-appearing body has a uterus, fallopian tubes, and in some cases the top of a vagina connecting to their penis.[1] It is unknown how common this is, however at least 250 individuals with PMDS have been reported in the medical literature.[2]
30-79% of individuals with this variation can't get an individual pregnant, however this is not always the case.[3] In some cases, the individual with this variation can get pregnant themself, if they have sperm injected into them.[4]
One with this variation likely also has a light case of ambiguous genitals or a micropenis. If they are born with a partial vagina, they may also have a case of cryptorchidism.
One with this variation may also have 45,X/46,XY Mosaicism and/or AMAB hypogonadism.[5] Inguinal hernias are also common for those with this variation.[6]
History
PMDS was first described by Nilson in 1939 in a young individual with 45,X/46XY Mosaicism.[7]
Flag
The PMDS flag was coined by Reign of the breadsticcs on May 7th of 2021. It has no confirmed meaning.[8]
